"Woodstock" was composed by Joni Mitchell, a Canadian-American songwriter. Multiple renditions emerged in 1970. Mitchell's interpretation debuted live in 1969 and was included on her April 1970 album Ladies of the Canyon as a B-side to "Big Yellow Taxi". The Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young version appeared on their March 1970 album Déjà Vu and became the most widely recognized American version, frequently played on classic rock radio. A British rendition by Matthews Southern Comfort achieved significant chart success, becoming the highest-charting UK version by reaching number one in 1970. A fourth adaptation by the Assembled Multitude also achieved chart success.
