Don Gibson, a country musician, wrote and composed this song, which first appeared on his 1958 album. Gibson originally recorded it in late 1957 for RCA Victor Records. The track was released the following year as the B-side to "Oh Lonesome Me," and both sides achieved success on country charts. By Gibson's death in 2003, over 700 artists had recorded versions, with Ray Charles's rendition becoming particularly notable for reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100.
