Chuck Berry wrote this song by adapting an existing American folk melody called "Wabash Cannonball." He first recorded his version in 1964 for the album St. Louis to Liverpool. Released in December 1964, it served as his fourth single following his release from prison after a Mann Act conviction. The single achieved modest chart success, reaching number 41 on the Billboard charts by January 1965.
