We Shall Overcome

Joan Baez All songs A–Z

"We Shall Overcome" is a gospel composition closely linked to the American civil rights movement. The song's exact origins remain uncertain, though it may derive from an earlier hymn by Charles Albert Tindley titled "I'll Overcome Some Day." The contemporary rendition was apparently first performed by tobacco workers under Lucille Simmons's leadership during a labor strike at a Charleston cigar factory in South Carolina between 1945 and 1946.
