The song was written by Bennie Benjamin, Horace Ott, and Sol Marcus for Nina Simone, who created the original recording in 1964 as part of her album Broadway-Blues-Ballads. The composition became widely covered by subsequent artists. Notable versions include a blues rock adaptation by the Animals in 1965 that achieved transatlantic success, a disco-influenced rearrangement by Santa Esmeralda in 1977 that also charted internationally, and a new wave interpretation by Elvis Costello in 1986 that gained popularity in British and Irish markets.
