Belle and Sebastian are a Scottish indie pop ensemble formed in Glasgow in 1996 under the creative direction of Stuart Murdoch. The group draws stylistic influence from baroque pop, chamber arrangements, and synth-pop elements, creating a distinctive sound that has drawn comparisons to artists such as the Smiths and Nick Drake. Since their formation, Belle and Sebastian have released twelve studio albums across multiple genres spanning indie rock, folk, and psychedelic pop. The band's name originated from a short story written by Murdoch, itself inspired by the 1965 television series of the same title.
