Hall served as the primary vocalist while Oates contributed electric guitar, backing vocals, and occasional lead performances. The pair wrote the majority of their material, working both independently and together. The group achieved peak commercial success between the mid-1970s and late 1980s, blending rock, soul, and rhythm and blues into a distinctive sound that resonated with audiences across multiple genres including pop, new wave, and soft rock.
