The song was written by Albert Hammond and Carole Bayer Sager, first appearing on Hammond's 1976 album of the same name. Leo Sayer's rendition became a major international success, topping the UK Singles Chart for three consecutive weeks in February 1977 and reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 for one week in May 1977. It also topped the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart. Billboard ranked it as the 24th most significant song of 1977.
