Willie Nelson composed this song while residing in Houston and employed at D Records under Pappy Daily's management, during a period when he also worked as a radio disc jockey and performed in clubs. After Nelson relocated to Nashville to work as a songwriter for Pamper Music, the composition was introduced to Patsy Cline through Hank Cochran.
