Xavier Cugat was a Spanish-born American bandleader and musician who became a central figure in popularizing Latin music throughout the United States. Born in Girona, Catalonia, he spent his youth in Havana before relocating to New York City in 1915. A skilled violinist and arranger, Cugat led the orchestra at the Waldorf–Astoria hotel from 1933 to 1949 and maintained a prolific recording career spanning four decades. Renowned as the "Rumba King," he performed in numerous films during the 1930s and 1940s while also working as a restaurateur and caricature artist. His contributions to mambo, rhumba, tango, and easy listening helped establish Latin music's prominence in American popular culture.
