Faye Wong is a Chinese singer-songwriter and actress born in Beijing who established herself as a major figure in Asian pop music. She moved to Hong Kong at age 18 and initially performed under the stage name Shirley Wong, releasing her Cantonese debut album in 1989. Her breakthrough came in 1992 with the Cantopop hit "Fragile Woman." Wong became known for synthesizing alternative music with Chinese pop sensibilities, and from the late 1990s onward focused primarily on Mandarin-language recordings.
