Víctor Jara

Víctor Jara

Victor Jara was a Chilean singer-songwriter, theater director, and poet who became a defining figure in Latin American folk music. Born in 1932, he initially worked as a drama instructor, staging productions ranging from classical works to contemporary experimental theater. Jara emerged as a leading voice in the Nueva canción chilena movement, a musical genre that blended traditional folk elements with socially conscious songwriting. His work gained prominence during Salvador Allende's presidency in the early 1970s, when he helped shape a wave of politically engaged popular music. A committed Communist activist, Jara's art and activism were inseparable. He died in 1973.
