Van der Graaf Generator is an English progressive rock band established in 1967 in Manchester by Peter Hammill and Chris Judge Smith. As the inaugural signing to Charisma Records, the group developed a distinctive sound blending progressive rock with experimental and art rock elements. Though they achieved limited commercial traction in Britain during their initial run, the band cultivated a devoted following in Italy throughout the 1970s. After disbanding in 1978, Van der Graaf Generator reconvened in 2005 and have since maintained an active recording and touring presence, with a core lineup featuring Hammill, organist Hugh Banton, and drummer Guy Evans.
