The song was composed by Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister during his time with the English space rock group Hawkwind. He subsequently recorded the track with his own band, Motörhead, which was named after this composition. The band's name was chosen on the recommendation of his manager, who suggested it instead of the originally intended name Bastard.
