Harris's rendition achieved significant chart success, reaching number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number four on the UK Singles Chart. Webb received recognition for his arrangement work, winning a Grammy Award in 1969. The song subsequently became popular with other artists, including versions by Waylon Jennings and The Kimberlys in 1970, and a disco adaptation by Donna Summer that topped charts in 1978.
