System of a Down is an Armenian-American heavy metal band established in Glendale, California, in 1994. The group combines elements of rock, metal, and experimental music with politically charged lyrics. Since 1997, the band's core lineup has included founding members Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, and Shavo Odadjian on bass, alongside drummer John Dolmayan, who joined after the departure of original drummer Andy Khachaturian. The ensemble is recognized for blending genres including alternative rock, nu metal, and avant-garde influences, establishing themselves as significant figures in heavy metal's alternative and politically conscious landscape.
