Through the Ashes of Empires is Machine Head's fifth studio album, marking a return to their groove and thrash metal roots after exploring nu metal on previous releases. The band shifted back to a sound reminiscent of their debut and second albums. Released internationally in October 2003, the album's strong reception led Roadrunner Records US to offer the band a new contract, allowing North American release in April 2004. Guitarist Phil Demmel made his debut with the band on this record.
