"Down So Long" was written by Jewel when she was eighteen years old in 1992 and produced by Patrick Leonard for her second studio album Spirit, released in 1998. The single version, which featured slight instrumental modifications, came out in March 1999 and notably represented the second occasion where Jewel did not re-record her vocal performance for the single release. The track achieved success on the US Billboard charts and in Canada, reaching the top 10 on two US Billboard charts.
