The song was written by Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins, first recorded by Loggins on his 1978 album Nightwatch. The Doobie Brothers' version on their eighth album Minute by Minute became the most famous recording. It debuted at number 73 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1979 and reached the top position in April 1979. The track won Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year in 1980, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2024.
