Sarah Vaughan was an American jazz vocalist and pianist who became one of the most celebrated singers of the twentieth century. Active from 1927 until her death in 1990, she earned widespread recognition for her extraordinary vocal range and interpretive gifts across jazz, bebop, cool jazz, and standards. Her nicknames—"Sassy," "The Divine One," and "Queen of Bebop"—reflected her commanding presence in the genre. Vaughan received two Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, and nine Grammy nominations overall. In 1989, she was honored with the NEA Jazz Masters Award, cementing her legacy as a defining voice in American music.
