Sammie Lee Smith is an American former National Football League running back who played college football at Florida State University. Selected ninth overall by the Miami Dolphins in the 1989 NFL draft, Smith had a promising start to his professional career, serving as Miami's primary starter during his first two seasons. However, recurring fumbling problems undermined his performance in 1991, resulting in a mid-season benching. Before the 1992 season, the Dolphins traded him to the Denver Broncos, where he saw minimal playing time. Released after that season concluded, Smith failed to attract interest from other NFL teams and retired in 1993.
