Rubén Blades is a Panamanian musician, singer, composer, actor, and political activist born in 1948. Working primarily in salsa and Latin jazz, Blades distinguished himself as a songwriter by infusing his compositions with lyrical depth drawn from Central American nueva canción and Cuban nueva trova traditions, alongside innovative arrangements and politically conscious elements. His approach created sophisticated dance music that engaged listeners intellectually. Among his most celebrated compositions are "Pedro Navaja" and "El Cantante." Blades has achieved significant commercial and critical recognition, earning twelve Grammy Awards from twenty-one nominations and twelve Latin Grammy Awards throughout his career.
