Roméo et Juliette is a five-act opera composed by Charles Gounod with a French libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré. The work adapts William Shakespeare's tragic play for the operatic stage. Premiered at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris on 27 April 1867, the opera has become a cornerstone of the French operatic repertoire. It is particularly distinguished by its four substantial duets for the principal characters and the soprano showpiece "Je veux vivre," a celebrated waltz song that remains popular with audiences and performers.
