Public Enemy is an American hip-hop group established in Roosevelt, New York in 1985 by Chuck D and Flavor Flav. Known for incorporating political commentary into their music, the group addressed issues including racial inequality and media representation in American society. Their 1987 debut album gained critical recognition, while their 1988 follow-up became the first hip-hop album to top The Village Voice's influential Pazz & Jop critics' poll. Throughout the 1990s, they released several successful albums that solidified their place in hip-hop history. The group has continued recording, contributing to film soundtracks and collaborative projects, with their most recent album released in 2025.
