A bolero composition created in 1932 by Mexican songwriter Consuelo Velázquez, this song became one of the most significant works in Latin music history and achieved major popularity as a twentieth-century pop standard and jazz standard. It earned recognition in 1999 as the most frequently recorded and adapted Spanish-language song ever. Notable renditions were performed by Trio Los Panchos and Gigliola Cinquetti in 1968, as well as by Dalida in 1976. English lyrics were provided by Sunny Skylar.
