This popular song was written and recorded by Don Gibson in December 1957, with production by Chet Atkins for RCA Victor in Nashville. Following its 1958 release, the track achieved significant commercial success, reaching the top of the country charts for eight weeks (not consecutively) and peaking at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking Gibson's only Top 10 pop chart hit. The B-side, "I Can't Stop Loving You," also performed well on country charts and later became a standard.
