N.E.R.D. is an American musical group that emerged from Virginia Beach, Virginia, blending rock, hip-hop, funk, and pop influences. The band was established in 1994 by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, who had been working as producers for other artists before launching the project as an offshoot of their production duo the Neptunes. Shay Haley joined as the third member, completing the group's core lineup. Signed to Virgin Records through industry figure Teddy Riley, N.E.R.D. developed a distinctive sound that fused rap with rock and funk elements, distinguishing them within the broader landscape of contemporary music.
