Mullmuzzler was a Canadian progressive metal project active from 1998 to 2005. Created by James LaBrie, the lead vocalist of Dream Theater, the project emerged when his record label initially prohibited him from releasing solo work under his own name. LaBrie devised the moniker Mullmuzzler, defining it as a term meaning to suppress or silence someone's thoughts before expression. The project allowed LaBrie to explore progressive metal outside his primary band commitments. For subsequent releases, he successfully negotiated the right to use his actual name on future recordings.
