The Mountain Goats are an American indie folk band established in 1991 in Claremont, California, by singer-songwriter John Darnielle. Originally operating as a solo project despite its plural name, the ensemble has evolved into a collaborative venture while maintaining Darnielle as its creative center. Currently based in Durham, North Carolina, the band has featured numerous musicians over its career, including drummer Jon Wurster, bassist Peter Hughes, guitarist Kaki King, and multi-instrumentalist Annie Clark, among others. The group's output spans indie rock, folk rock, and lo-fi aesthetics, earning recognition on the 4AD label and within independent music circles.
