"Cruel Summer" was written by Bananarama alongside Steve Jolley and Tony Swain. Released in 1983 as a standalone single, it was later incorporated into their second self-titled album the following year. The track achieved significant chart success, reaching number eight on the UK Singles Chart in 1983 and number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100 after being featured in the 1984 film The Karate Kid.
