"Holiday" was recorded by Madonna for her 1983 self-titled debut album. The song was written by Curtis Hudson and Lisa Stevens-Crowder from Pure Energy, originally intended for that group before being rejected and eventually brought to Madonna by producer John "Jellybean" Benitez. Recording occurred at Sigma Sound Studios in New York City with modifications including a piano solo. It was released as the lead single on September 7, 1983, and was preceded by a promotional double A-side release with "Lucky Star".
