"Jingle Bells" is a widely recognized American song composed by James Lord Pierpont. Originally published as "The One Horse Open Sleigh" in September 1857, the song initially had no Christmas connection. It became associated with winter and Christmas during the 1860s and 1870s, and appeared in various parlor song and college anthologies throughout the 1880s. The earliest known recording dates to 1889 on an Edison cylinder, though that recording is lost; a surviving 1898 Edison Records version exists.
