Merle Haggard was an American country music singer, songwriter, guitarist, and fiddler who profoundly shaped the genre throughout his career. Born in 1937, Haggard became a central figure in developing the Bakersfield sound, a style that distinguished him within country music. Over more than five decades of recording and performing, he achieved remarkable commercial success, earning 38 number-one hits on the US country charts, with many crossing over to mainstream recognition. His extensive output also included Christmas music. Haggard passed away in 2016, leaving behind a legacy as one of country music's most influential artists. His recordings were affected by the 2008 Universal fire.
