Melissa Etheridge is an American rock musician and singer-songwriter known for her powerful voice and guitar work across rock, folk rock, and blues rock styles. Born in 1961, she emerged in the late 1980s with her self-titled debut album, which achieved underground popularity and reached number 22 on the Billboard 200. The album's lead single earned her an early Grammy nomination. Her second album followed quickly in 1989, generating additional Grammy recognition. By 1992, Etheridge secured her first Grammy Award win with a track from her third studio release, establishing herself as a significant figure in American rock music.
